ARMENIAN GENOCIDE AFFIRMATION

The Armenian Assembly of America strongly supports the Armenian Genocide resolution (H. Res. 252) reaffirming the U.S. record on the Armenian Genocide and urging the President of the United States to properly acknowledge the Armenian Genocide in his annual April 24th commemorative address.

This April marked the 94rd anniversary of the cataclysmic events that occurred in the Ottoman Empire from 1915-1923, where 1.5 million Armenians were killed and over a half a million survivors were exiled.

The U.S. National Archives contain thousands of pages documenting the premeditated extermination of the Armenian people.

As the Armenian Genocide was being committed, the United States launched an unprecedented diplomatic, political and humanitarian campaign to end the carnage and protect the survivors.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Turkey continues to deny its genocidal legacy, ignoring what U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Henry Morgenthau, called “a campaign of race extermination…” as well as the public declaration in 2000 by 125 Genocide and Holocaust scholars which affirmed the incontestable historical fact of the Armenian Genocide and accordingly urged the governments of Western democracies to likewise recognize it as such.

In an independent legal analysis of the events of 1915, the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) concluded that the “Events, viewed collectively, can thus be said to include all of the elements of the crime of genocide as defined in the [UN Genocide] Convention, and legal scholars as well as historians, politicians, journalists and other people would be justified in continuing to so describe them.”

Affirming the Armenian Genocide ensures that the legacy of the Genocide is remembered so that crimes against humanity are not repeated.

Action Needed:

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES – Urge timely passage and co-sponsorship of this important human rights legislation, introduced by Congressman Schiff (D-CA) and Radanovich (R-CA).
